Autumn family activities are full of color, tradition and fun.

Since Chicago weather can turn in an instant, families try to pack as many outdoor activities into the last moments of fine autumn weather. From watching the leaves change colors to taking the annual picture in a pumpkin patch, the number of fall activities is numerous.

I have compiled a few favorite autumn family activities that my family has enjoyed in the Chicago area.

Morton Arboretum: When the sun is still shining, a walk around Morton Arboretum can make any family smile. All around Meadow Lake are nature-themed scarecrows. This trail travels one-mile and can make a perfect photo moment. Other special events in the fall are Fall Color Festival Fare, Trick or Trees, and Family Jack O’Lantern Hikes. These special events are an additional cost above regular admission. Morton Arboretum is located at 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle, IL 60532

Apple Picking: So many local farms have tons of apple trees ripe for picking. What’s better fun than seeing how many bags of apples your family can bring home. Choose a local farm like Kuipers Farms or drive a little further for a day long trip. Don’t forget to grab an apple cider donut. If you are close to Wisconsin, check out Elegant Farmer, their apple pies, baked in a brown bag, are amazing (as seen on the Food Network).

Pumpkin pictures: Many families capture a fall moment by having the kids take a picture in a pumpkin patch. Some local farms offer staged picture taking areas. Honestly, a big pile of pumpkins can make for an adorable family photo. Don’t tell the kids that it is photo time. Just let them explore and play while you snap away. Our family favorite pumpkin patch, Keller Farm stand. Helpful hint, try to pick an off-time for pictures because the area can get crowded.

Corn Mazes: In the Chicago area, there are many farms that offer corn mazes. From the simple, easy to follow designs, to the elaborate, holiday themes, there is a maze for every personality and difficulty. Some personal favorites are: All Seasons Orchard – Woodstock, Kuipers Family Farm – Maple Park, Odyssey Fun Farm – Tinley Park, and Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm – Lockport.

Do you have favorite autumn family activities that I didn’t mention?
