Fun at every turn, Six Flags Great America

Once school ends and warm, summer weather hit, our kids ask the very important question. When are we visiting Six Flags Great America?  Nestled between the Illinois and Wisconsin border, Six Flags Great America is a family friendly attraction that everyone enjoys.

When our family picks our visit date, each person gets to choose a favorite, must ride attraction. Usually, we print the map to mark our plan for the visit. If your family isn’t purchasing a Fast Pass (an additional fee pass that allows the user to jump in line), I would recommended putting your must ride items on the top of the list. As the day progresses, lines can get long and sometimes everyone’s patience can be waning.

For my oldest, he usually picks a roller coaster. This year, his favorite choice was the Viper. The wooden roller coaster is fast with a bug plunge at the beginning of the ride. For this summer, the Six Flags Great America special was that Viper was running backwards. The twist on the ride made a classic family friendly attraction feel new.

My other son prefers water themed rides. The Logger’s Run, a type of flume ride, or Buccaneer Battle, riders try to squirt others with water, are his personal favorites. While I prefer to avoid water rides, I opt for these rides during the middle of the day when hopefully it is warm (allowing everyone to dry quickly).

Six Flags Great America does a great job of balancing large coasters with family friendly attractions. Many rides allow the smaller children to accompany adults. This policy helps everyone to get into the adventure fun. Options like the Whizzler are fun for the entire family.

For the thrill seekers, X Flight and Batman should top the list. Thrilling, but not jaw dropping are favorites American Eagle and the Dark Knight. Depending on your fear level, there is a ride for you.

For those who want no part of the drops, twists and turns, there are many shows and performances throughout the day. These stage shows are a great way for everyone to take a break and relax in between the walking and standing in line.

Also, Six Flags Great America offers Hurricane Harbor, a full water park, for free with your admission. Personally, our family does just the Six Flags ride portion when we visit. For my kids, the rides, shows and games will fill an entire day.

Six Flags Great America is located off I-94 in Gurnee, Illinois. Ticket prices range depending current promotions. For specific times, admission prices, and to plan your visit, please the website www.sixflags.com/greatamerica/index.aspx.
