With the new year closely approaching, 2014 resolutions are coming into focus. For 2014, resolve to make family travel memories. Family travel memories come in all shapes and sizes. A simple day getaway can bring out the silliness in the kids. While a fully planned, lengthy trip can become a topic of conversation for year. Here are some of our family’s trips from 2013 that we will be talking about for years.

International Travel

In 2013, we took our first international trip as a family. While I traveled extensively before marriage, I waited till my kids were school aged to take them aboard. When it comes to these types of trips, planning is key. From learning a few local customs to understanding the cultural differences, the trip becomes real even before you get on the plane. Some of the best souvenirs can be the kids’ travel journals. Each morning, the kids wrote about the previous day. After the trip, I took their stories and incorporated them into a memory book. For years to come we can look back and remember the good times.

Traveling over a holiday

Sometimes ditching the turkey dinner and going off the grid can be a great idea for a holiday trip. This year our family spent Thanksgiving in Detroit and attending a professional football game. With no family or turkey dinner, the day was full of fun, silly time but we were making family travel memories. From eating the second best sandwich in America to saying hello to Canada, it was the most memorable Thanksgiving we had in many year.

Day trips

Who said that family travel memories come with long, extended vacations. A simple day trip into Chicago can become a talking point for years. From a water taxi to Chinatown to a ride on the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, a day trip is all about experiencing time and places together. Now when we drive into the city, the kids get excited when they see the Chinatown exit and talk about the different foods we ate on that day.

In the end, family travel memories are about spending time as a family. It isn’t the money spent or the glamorous locale. In 2014, resolve to take time with your loved ones and make some new family travel memories.

  2. Hey, this is a great place. I never heard of a beautiful Myrtle Beach in South Carolina not until now. I think this is a perfect destination for our family vacation 2 months from now. This is my first time to bring my kids and I’m sure they’ll love it here. They are all beach lovers and they will be excited to visit this place soon. My husband would love it here too, maybe he can surf in this beach too. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I’m so looking forward to taking my children on international adventures when they are old enough. (They’re only 1 and 2 now.) Both my husband & I traveled & lived in various places abroad while we were single.
